Voters go to ballot in by-election, Alberta’s Smith seeks parliamentary seat

Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada – Alberta Prime Minister Daniel Smith will confirm today whether she has a seat in Congress.

Smith is one of five candidates running for a by-election in Brooks Medicine Hat’s Southern constituency.

The other candidates are NDP’s Gwendolyn Dark, Alberta’s Barry Morishita, Independent’s Bob Brywan and Wild Rose Independent’s Jeevan Mangat.

The seat was opened a month ago when United Conservative MP Mikaela Frey resigned.

Smith was elected leader of the United Conservative Party in early October, but has not been an MP since 2015.

With 34,000 eligible voters, only about 4,200 votes were cast in the pre-voting. That’s about half of those who voted early in the 2019 local elections.

This report by the Canadian Press was first published on November 8, 2022.
