Gondek came to power just over a year ago after winning over 45% of the popular vote. She was 15 percent behind her second-place contender Jerome Farkas.

In this latest survey, only 11% strongly approve of her performance and 35% strongly disagree.

The survey found that residents of northwestern Calgary and inner-city areas are more likely to approve the mayor. Disapproval was higher in the south of the city. Men tend to hate the mayor, especially him over the age of 55.

Mayor Jyoti Gondec said he was not surprised by the numbers given the difficult times the city is in.

“People are very frustrated with public safety,” the mayor said. “They are frustrated with social equity issues.

She said she understands the frustration, but added that her job is not a popularity contest.

“The job is to make decisions at unpopular times to do the right thing,” she said. I think it’s because of the times we’re in.”

Trustee approval is also low, with 39% of Calgarians saying they approve of their work and 35% saying they disapprove.

Marc Henry, president of ThinkHQ, said the numbers don’t look good for the council.

“I mean, I’ve never seen a number that low,” Henry said. “And you know, I’ve been doing city halls and polls, and I don’t remember ever seeing a Calgary city councilor or mayor with such low approval ratings.”

Henry said the disapproval was not just a case of toxic social media eroding politicians’ approval.

“Canada has popular politicians,” he said, noting that Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi’s approval rating remains in the 50% range.

“For example, if you look at the historical trend of councils, when people are asked to rate councilors, they track roughly 50% in aggregate.”

Henry said the mayor’s approval ratings are still within margin of error from their spring levels, but the city council’s approval ratings are down 6 percentage points, which he believes speaks for itself.

He said the councilors went through a number of scandals in their first year, including details about the Ward 4 Coun. Sean Chu was reprimanded by police for making inappropriate physical contact with her 16-year-old girl in the 1990s, and three reports were issued against her by the Integrity Commissioner in early July. I was. Survey data was collected on his October 17-20 in front of the Capitol. His Dan McLean’s latest troubles with leaked audio files.

“I think the scandal certainly has an impact,” Henry said.

Ward 3 County Jasmine Mian said it was hard for her to walk into the workplace and watch a scandal involving other individuals on the council.

“I think it will affect the public perception, but I think we are 15 individuals and we need to look at our own individual results and our own relationships within the ward. “That’s what really matters to me and how I serve my residents.”

Gondek also spoke out on the scandal, saying that the council’s limited powers to deal with disciplinary matters were troubling.

“Calgarians are frustrated, at best, by our incredibly limited ability to deal with council members who admit to having sexual relations with children,” she said. “They were frustrated that we didn’t do anything, and frankly, what we tried to do wasn’t leading to meaningful action.”

Word 1 count. Sonya Sharp said she would like to see how the individual alderman numbers stack up against each other.

“If there are a few councilors who are lowering their averages, maybe some of us can work with those councilors and say, ‘What’s going on? What can I do for you? ‘ said Sharpe. “Because we are all here to serve, and he can be with us for three years.”

Henry said he didn’t read much about the older man’s lashing out at the mayor.

“[Older men]tend to be more negative about government as a whole,” Henry said. “It’s less so in conservative governments than in nonpartisan governments, but older men tend to be a little more fed up with these things.”

He sees an opportunity for the council to increase approval numbers in upcoming budget deliberations.

“We’ll lay out our operational and infrastructure priorities for the next four years and look at what taxation will look like in the next four years. These are opportunities to reset and ensure your priorities are aligned with theirs. I want the public to see what’s going on,” Henry said.

“Or you can screw it up.”

The poll sampled 1,172 Calgarians who are members of the Angus Reed Forum. The panel is weighted to reflect the gender, age and region of the Calgary population, according to Statistics Canada.

Although it was not a random sample, the margin of error for an equivalent random sample size would be plus or minus 2.8 percentage points 19 out of 20 times.
