Virginia Police: Multiple dead in Walmart shooting

A shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Va., on Tuesday night left several people dead or injured, although the exact number was not immediately known.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at a Walmart on Sam’s Circle around 10:15 p.m. and found evidence of the shooting shortly after arriving, Chesapeake Officer Leo Kosinski said in a briefing.

Officers spent 35 to 40 minutes finding multiple dead and wounded people inside the store, he said, and gathered a rescue team and a tactics team to enter the store and tend to the victims.

Police believe one shooter has died. Kosinski said they believed the shooting stopped when police arrived. He did not have a death toll, but he said it was “less than 10 now.”

Kosinski said he didn’t believe police opened fire, but said he didn’t know if the shooter died from self-inflicted injuries.

“We are shocked by this tragic incident at our Chesapeake, Virginia store,” Walmart tweeted early Wednesday. We are working closely with law enforcement and are focused on supporting our associates,” the tweet said.

Sentara Healthcare spokesman Mike Kafka said in a text message that five Walmart patients are being treated at Norfolk General Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately clear.

The Virginia shooting comes three days after one person opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five and injuring 17 others. The shooting occurred in a year when the country was rocked by the death of 21 people in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Tuesday’s shooting also brought back memories of another Walmart shooting in 2019. Police say the shooter targeted a Mexican national, who opened fire at an El Paso store, killing 22 people. There were no security guards on duty at Walmart that day.

Senator Mark Warner tweeted, “I’m sick of reports of yet another mass shooting, this time at a Walmart in Chesapeake.” State Senator Louise Lucas tweeted Warner’s sentiments, stating, “Very heartbroken that the recent mass shooting in America happened at a Walmart in my neighborhood.”

Chesapeake Police have tweeted that a family reunion location has been set up at the Chesapeake Conference Center. This site is intended for emergency contact information only for immediate family members or anyone who may have been in the building.

Chesapeake is about 11 kilometers (7 miles) south of Norfolk.
