Victoria police seize rental scam suspect accused of beheading thousands of victims – BC

Victoria Police are looking for more potential victims after they say they have arrested two rental scammers who swindled victims out of at least 10 of thousands of dollars.

Police say they were recently alerted to a series of “skillful” scams, with victims reporting similarities to the suspects’ descriptions and methods.

Investigators said the suspect posted online advertisements, communicated with the victim by email and text over weeks and months, and then “brazenly” met with the victim, called referrals, and made false statements. handed over the key fob of

Believing he had a valid rental agreement, the victim deposited the first month’s rent and damage deposit before realizing he had been defrauded.

Alert property manager pulls stabbing wound on suspect

Police took a break in the case in early September when one of the suspects met the victim and showed him a suite in the building he claimed to be renting.

The victim sent money to the suspect, but became suspicious and contacted the building manager, who told him the room was not actually for rent.

The property manager then found the fake rental property and contacted a scammer claiming to be the renter who wanted to see the property.

As they gathered to view the unit, he confronted the suspect and recorded the encounter. He also put the suspect on speakerphone with the victim, who promised to return the money he received, but police said he did not comply.

On September 2, police searched the building and arrested one of the two suspects in the incident. Investigators say they also found evidence of another ongoing fraud in the same building.

A little more than two weeks later, a victim of one of his previous scams spotted the alleged scammer in downtown Victoria and called the police.

Police then found that he was already facing 36 unrelated and unresolved fraud-related charges and had sought a warrant for violating related terms.

Both suspects have since been released pending future court dates.

In a media statement, police said, “Given the man’s extensive history of fraud charges and convictions, and the number of victims in the current string of frauds that officers are investigating, investigators believe there are additional victims. I am concerned that it is possible.

Investigators have released a photo of the suspect, who has been accused of at least nine frauds and has asked anyone who lost him money to contact Victoria Police.
