Vernon Magnums march to state football final in Kelowna

dominant.

The Vernon Blue Magnums defeated the Kelowna Blue Spartans, 63-6, in the Junior Bantam Championship Game of the Southern Interior Football Conference at Greater Vernon Athletic Park on Sunday, November 20.

The win will advance the Magnums to the BC final on Sunday 4 December at Langley. They will face the Coquitlam Blues or the Saanich Wolverines for the state title. These teams will play in the Lower Mainlands this weekend.

“The kids figured out what needed to be done and they showed up,” said Helmet West, Vernon’s quality control specialist and receivers coach. “Now we are focused on continuing this effort and enthusiasm to the state.”

On the first play of Sunday’s game, the Spartans put pressure on the toss, causing a fumble and Magnum End’s Josh Vandenberg to steal the ball. A two-yard plunge from Caden O’Dwyer, the first running back in the two majors, capped off the opening drive.

Kelowna fired and hit receivers deep with an aerial attack to tie the score at 6-6. A stout Magnum defensive unit will not allow you to advance through these gaps and score any more points for the rest of the game.

Vernon’s run game with the ball was shown. Some great blocks from offensive linemen allowed Vandenberg to break three scores for a total of 95 yards on the ground. Owen West slipped past a defender for a 40-yard touchdown and Oliver Harkness touched down the middle of the goal line to score the point.

Magnum quarterback Brock Warner does the offensive hum, and his decision-making is largely responsible for the team’s biggest offensive outburst of the season, hitting Vandenberg in the end zone late in the game to seal the win. I was even involved in the scoring by doing so.
