Canada Places 7th, Kenya Wins Gold and Silver at World Mountain and Trail Running Championships
Team Kenya won gold and silver this morning at the inaugural World Mountain and Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Patrick Kipgeno Wins the men’s classic uphill 8.5 km race (approximately 1,000 m top) in 46:51 with his compatriots Philemon Kiriago 2nd place with 48 minutes 24 seconds.
The inaugural WMTRC is a collaboration between World Athletics, World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and International Trail Running Association (ITRA).
Kipngeno entered the race as the favorite after a dominant performance on the Mountain Running World Cup circuit. There, the prestigious Thyon-Dixence he won, and in the Sierre-Zinal he came second. Kipngeno beat Kiriago, who had just started mountain running during the pandemic, by a minute and a half ahead of him.spanish Alejandro Garcia I settled for bronze at 49:03.
Kipngeno and Kiriago hope to replicate their performance when they take part in Sunday’s classic up-down 11.2 km race.
Alexandre Ricard Originally from Squamish, British Columbia. Remy Leroux Quebec’s finished 14th, four places behind Ricard in 50:56, while the Canadian men’s team finished seventh overall.
in the women’s race, Ally McLaughlin Team USA won gold in 55:15. This comes just a week after he won the Golden Trail World Series Finals in Madeira, Portugal.Austrian Andrea Meyer Wins silver in 55:41 and is a two-time Golden Trail World Series champion in ultra-trail runners Maud Matisse I was 3rd at 56:00.
The 32-year-old McLaughlin joined the pack late with Mayer and Mattis, moved with a kilometer to go and never looked back to win his second World Mount Running individual title. (In 2014, she was the long-distance race world champion).

They’ve all entered both mountain races in Chiang Mai, so they’ll clash again in Sunday’s classic up-down race.
Kelly Lovebrek From Ottawa, she was the only Canadian woman in the race to finish 30th in 1:04:59.
Over 900 athletes from 46 Member Federations compete in five men’s and women’s races, including one for U20 athletes.
