Simu Liu criticizes ‘Gatekeeper’ Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino’s comments about Marvel

To Corey Atad.

Simu Liu does not stand by his criticism of Marvel.

On Tuesday, the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” star called out directors Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino to Twitter for their comments about the superhero franchise.

“If Tarantino and Scorsese were the only gatekeepers to movie stardom, they wouldn’t have had the chance to lead a $400 million-plus movie.

Calling both of them “transcendental writers,” he added, “They never turn their noses at me or anyone else.”

Liu also wrote of Marvel: [studio] We have made a sustained effort to improve on-screen diversity by creating heroes that empower and inspire people in all communities around the world. ”

The actor said, “I loved The Golden Age too..but it was white as hell.

His tweet came after Tarantino spoke on the “2 Bears, 1 Cave” podcast and shared his take on the nature of movie stars in the Marvel universe.

“Part of the Marvelization of Hollywood is that every actor who’s become famous has played these characters,” he said. Thor is a star.”

The director added: But it’s the characters in these franchises that become the stars. ”

While explaining that he doesn’t dislike Marvel movies, Tarantino said, “My only ax for them is that they’re the only ones they seem to be made for. It’s the only thing that seems to generate any kind of excitement between, or even the studios that are creating them. It’s just the fact that it’s an overall expression of the era. There’s not much room for anything else. That’s my problem.”

He continues: The aspect is that if these movies had come out when I was in my twenties, I would have been totally happy and totally loved them. They will be those movies among other movies. But hey, I’ll be 60 soon. No, I’m not that excited about them. ”

Scorsese hasn’t commented on Marvel lately, but in the last few years he’s sparked a wave of controversy with his statements about the franchise.

In 2019, after comparing Marvel movies to theme park rides and saying they weren’t movies, the director of “Taxi Driver” said: new york times extend his view.

“As I know, a lot of the things that define a movie are in Marvel movies. What’s not there is revelation, mystery, or true emotional danger.” There is nothing,” he wrote. “Photographs are created to meet a specific set of requirements and are designed as a limited number of variations on a theme.”

Scorsese continued. Why not leave superhero movies and other franchise movies alone? The reason is simple. In this country and in many places around the world, franchise films have become the first choice if you want to see something on the big screen. There are fewer theaters. ”

He also wrote more broadly about the state of the film: Many of them are well crafted by teams of talented individuals. That said, they lack something essential to cinema: the unified vision of individual artists. Because, of course, the individual artist is the most risky factor. ”

Liu, meanwhile, seemed to realize the backlash he would endure after posting a tweet denouncing the two filmmakers.

In another tweet, he wrote, “Be prepared for internet trolls of losers,” accompanied by a clip of himself entering a martial arts stance during the “Shang-Chi” scene.

Reaction to Liu’s tweet was ubiquitous, with many pushing back against him.

However, there were those who supported Liu.

So far, neither Scorsese nor Tarantino have commented on Liu’s tweet.
