University of Regina Introduces New Energy Systems Engineering Program Fall 2023

We’re only a few weeks into the semester, but the University of Regina has already introduced its first three programs for next year.

As part of the engineering program, students can focus on learning three new energy-based programs.

Petroleum Engineering, Sustainable Energy Engineering, and Energy Transport and Storage are all offered from the Fall 2023 semester, as the faculty focuses on renewable energy research.

“The energy landscape is rapidly changing not only in this state, but nationally and even globally, and as a faculty member, I am committed to equipping my students with the skills and training they need to succeed in this increasingly demanding field. In a press release, Dr. Phillip Choi, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, said:

“No Canadian university offers an energy-related curriculum as comprehensive as the proposed Energy Systems Engineering program.”

The faculty says the energy sector is constantly changing, so new research is needed to prepare the next generation of engineers.

“Our country has a lot of challenges moving forward in terms of energy supply, food supply, clean water, all sorts of issues,” said David Demontigny, vice-chancellor of the Faculty of Engineering and Science.

“We need to get young people interested in engineering, and on the energy front, obviously it’s a field that needs a lot of attention to move forward.”

The majority of new classes are introduced in Year 4 when students begin to specialize in a particular area of ​​study.

Bailey Armstrong, president of the Regina Engineering Students’ Society, said:

“It is exciting to see our faculty leading adaptations to the evolving energy sector by creating diverse and unique programs that are sure to be of interest to students who want to be at the forefront of change.”

Currently, the undergraduate Petroleum Systems Engineering (PSE) program is being phased out and enrollment has been suspended. However, students currently enrolled in PSE may continue the program until graduation.
