Tonga issues tsunami warning after magnitude 7.3 earthquake hits region – Nationwide

The Tongan government on Friday issued a tsunami warning after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the ocean about 207 kilometers from the capital, warning residents to move inland to higher ground.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was at a depth of 24.8 kilometers and hit the sea about 207 kilometers southeast of Neiafu to the east.

A tsunami warning has also been issued for American Samoa, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). Dangerous tsunamis from the quake could occur within 300 kilometers of the epicenter along the coasts of Niue and Tonga, it said.

Tonga’s weather service has warned residents to move inland.

“An emergency tsunami warning has been issued for all of Tonga as a strong earthquake was felt in the Kingdom tonight. Please move inland immediately until further notice,” it said on its Facebook page.
