Toronto opens outdoor ice rink today

Starting today, skaters can enjoy a spin at Toronto’s public outdoor ice rink.

The city launched its Welcome TO Winter program today and plans to open 52 outdoor ice rinks across the city over the next two weeks.

38 ice rinks open today and will remain open until March 19, 2023. A further 14 rinks will open on his December 3rd and will remain open until February 26th, 2023.

Skating rinks at Dufferin Grove Park and Ledbury Park are expected to open once the capital construction work is complete.

Outdoor rink open from 10am to 10pm

Skaters are encouraged to check skating rink conditions before heading out on the city’s website.

Additionally, a natural ice rink will open in January 2023, weather permitting.

“We want people to be able to enjoy our parks and other outdoor spaces as year-round as possible. We have a lot of activities,” Mayor John Torrey said in a statement Thursday.

As part of this year’s Welcome TO Winter program, the city is also introducing a ringtone pilot program in six locations.

“Participants from the age of 6 can easily participate in this exciting and rapidly growing sport. Ringuette is a contactless sport played on the ice rink using ringuette rings and ringuette sticks,” said the city11. This was stated in a news release dated May 25.

No pre-registration is required for this activity. Participants will be able to rent equipment from select locations beginning in early December.

This year, the city is also offering 29 locations for female shinnies with dedicated time slots.

To help residents learn to skate, the city also launched a new mobile skate lending library this year.

In partnership with the Desjardins Group, the library offers:

  • 150 skating aids including 2 accessible skating aids

  • 60 pairs of skates and 60 helmets have been added to the city’s skate library

  • Dedicated customized vans to travel to various locations

No reservations are required to use the lending library, free of charge.
