John Cassidy, a seismologist at Natural Resources Canada, said the quake occurred offshore about 35 kilometers northwest of Tofino. 32 km deep.

There were no reports of damage, but more than 250 people in Earthquake Canada reported feeling the ground shaking.

Cassidy said it’s big enough to be felt over a very wide area, from Vancouver Island to Greater Vancouver and even Seattle.

The Juan de Fuca oceanic plate lies about 30 kilometers below the surface of the region, and earthquakes that hit here tend to have little or no aftershocks, he said.

“So in this case it was one of these deeper quakes, so there were no aftershocks,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy said there was no reason to think the quake was a symptom of larger quakes to come, but said it was a good reminder that the BC coast is on a fault line.

“We always have the potential for a large earthquake in this region, so it is important to fall when you feel a tremor, find a place to hide, and be prepared to grab hold,” he said. He said.

MLA for Mid Island Pacific Rim’s Josie Osborne tweeted that her whole house was shaking.
