Tigers sack GM Al Avila as team picks pace on six-game losing streak

DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers fired general manager Al Avila on Wednesday, ending a seven-year tenure without a playoff appearance.

Owner Chris Ilitch has announced that his team has had another disappointing season. Detroit went 43-68 Wednesday and he was AL Central at the end.

As the team prepares to host Cleveland, Ilic said in a statement ahead of a press conference, “I want to regain momentum and progress towards building a winning team, and I’m looking for talent to help do that. I am driven to find a certain executive.

Ilitch invested millions of dollars in the offseason trying to get his team back in contention. Assistant General Manager Sam Menjing will assume day-to-day leadership roles.

Avila was promoted to General Manager on August 4, 2015 after serving as an assistant to Dave Dombrowski.

The Tigers had only one winning season (2016) when Avila was GM.
