This weekend, songwriters from across the Ottawa area will join forces at Red Bird Live at 1165 Bank Street to raise money for the Ottawa Food Bank. The Music He’s been on for two nights, Friday at 7pm with Lynn Hanson, Silent Winters, Tara Shannon, Sean Francisco and more, and Saturday at 6pm with Ian Tamblyn, Lynn Miles, OK Naledi and Paul Weber. Ottawa-born rocker Jacquie Neville, former frontwoman of The Balconies, is in the limelight with her first solo album, If You Get Lonely. “This album is a celebration of the importance of being true to yourself and finding beauty in chaos,” the 35-year-old musician said at the time of its release. Stylistically diverse, with themes ranging from mental health and dead-end work to love and loss, it features Neville’s soaring voice and knack for melody. After two years of online festivals, the 37th edition of the European Union Film Festival will be a hybrid of films available online and an in-person event at the Alma Duncan Salon at the Ottawa Art Gallery. One of the highlights of the program’s 27 films, including drama, comedy, action and documentary, is the screening of the Polish film “I Never Cry” (25 November at 6:30 pm), followed by There will be a face-to-face Q&A. Two Steves from Ottawa’s jazz scene – trombonist and vocalist Steve Berndt and pianist Steve Boudreau – will team up at the Gigspace Performance Studio on Saturday night. The partnership picks up where Bernd’s longstanding collaboration with the late Ottawa pianist Brian Brown left off.
