The fall marathon season kicks off on Sunday, September 25th with the 48th Berlin Marathon in Germany. The biggest name is long-distance running Eliud Kipchoge Coming back to the course that set the world record four years ago, everyone wonders if it will ever run in 2:01:39.

He is also aiming to become the second man to win four Berlin Marathon titles. Haile Gebrselassie, Four consecutive victories from 2006 to 2009.

Kipchoge isn’t the only athlete chasing records in Berlin.National Marathon Record Holder Keira D’Amato He is aiming for the American record of 2:19:12, recovering quickly from his 8th-place finish at the World Championships. she ran in houston Earlier this year.

of Vancouver Natasha Wodak The only Canadian in the elite field, she’s looking to take advantage of Berlin’s high-speed course. I recorded my marathon time. She followed that performance with an impressive 13th place finish for her in the marathon at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Wodak wants to shave 90 seconds off Sunday’s marathon PB Malindi Elmore Canadian record of 2:24:50 from 2019.

weather

The race starts on Sunday at 9:15am local time (3:15am in Canada). Temperatures are between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius with almost no wind, which seems perfect for a marathon.

Men want to finish close to Kipchoge

It’s no secret that Kipchoge is the frontrunner, but who is most likely to finish second or stay with him until 30K?

Ethiopian Gue Adola, After finishing second to Kipchoge in 2017, he won Berlin last fall in 2:05:45. The win marked his first major victory after struggling with injuries early in his career. Like Kipchoge, Adora is fast and knows what it takes to win at this course. In 2017, he made his fastest ever marathon debut at the course, but he hasn’t run nearly 2:03 since.

Adora is the only other runner Kipchoge finishes under 2:05. If anyone else won this race, it would mean either they worked a miracle or both Kipchoge and Adora exploded.

Gilmay Gebreslassie After missing the podium at the Rio Olympics, he won the 2015 Beijing World Championships and the 2016 New York Marathon. Ghebreslassie has experience, but he may not be fast enough to catch Adora or Kipchoge in a 2:05 race.

Could Keira D’Amato Be The First American Winner?

D’Amato is the fastest of the 24 runners in the women’s elite field with a time of 2:19:12, but has been preparing for Berlin after posting a 2:23:34 at the World Championships in Berlin. I had only nine weeks to do it. Eugene. She was later selected for the US team Molly Seidel dropped out weeks before the championship.

A 2:23 time at the World Championships was impressive for not training as much and should give D’Amato a confidence boost on the faster Berlin track.

Many of Kenya’s and Ethiopia’s top runners are due later this fall, but Berlin has others under 2:22.Kenyan Nancy Gelagat Met (2:19:31 – Valencia) and Vivian Chepkirui, Having won April’s Vienna City Marathon in 2:20:59, he has the experience and speed to deny D’Amato the title.

rosemary wanjiru A 65:34 half marathoner from Kenya, she will make her marathon debut here in Berlin. This is her first marathon, but she will be competing for most of the race.
