BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, October 18, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Eclipse Foundation, one of the world’s largest open source foundations, Eclipse Theia, with a new type of software release that enhances the current monthly Theia updates. Known as Theia community release, this new release consolidates 3 months worth of Eclipse Theia updates into his single release. One exception is the first release with all major updates to Eclipse Theia in 2022.
Eclipse Theia is an open source platform for developing cloud and desktop IDEs and tools based on modern web technologies. Theia offers adopters complete flexibility in building custom IDEs, domain-specific tools, and complete white label solutions. At the same time, it is compatible with current de facto standards such as Language Server Protocol (LSP), VS Code extensions, and even UI technologies like React.
“Eclipse Theia is Next-generation tools and application platform From the Eclipse Foundation. Theia has been a strong innovation driver since his inception five years ago,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “With the introduction of community releases, Theia continues to be at the heart of the rapidly growing Eclipse Cloud DevTools ecosystem. Happy 5th Anniversary, Eclipse Theia!”
As previously mentioned, Theia follows a monthly release cycle to continuously enable cutting-edge and rapid innovation for its adopters. In addition to this monthly release, as of September 2022, Theia will provide community releases every three months. This brings together development and integration technology for adopters. The first community release will include more of these innovations, including everything developed in 2022. Some of these features are:
- new toolbar – The most user-friendly feature added to Theia in 2022 is support for configurable toolbars. Theia Toolbar has a lot of flexibility. The tool author can decide if it’s part of the tool and what it looks like initially. Tool users can adjust the toolbar, add, remove, and rearrange items. It is also possible for the user to select a custom her icon for the action.
- UX improvements – A lot of work has gone into myriad UX improvements across Theia workbench. Examples include better support for multiple editors, reorganized menus, and better rendering of tabs.
- Memory View and Disassembly View – Since 1.28, Theia provides a comprehensive disassembly view powered by the Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP).
- VS Code extension compatibility – One of the cool things about Eclipse Theia is that it can host VS Code extensions. As a creator of a tool or IDE based on Theia, you can make features provided as VS Code extensions, such as language servers, part of your product.
- Improvements for recruiters – Documentation overhaul, new testing framework, and other improvements especially for developers building new apps using Eclipse Theia

A quote from the adopters and contributors of the Eclipse Theia project:

“Eclipse Theia allows tool builders to create desktop and web-based IDEs using the same codebase. This is a very important use case for many adopters.. “The flexibility of the platform allows us to add, adapt, and even remove all sorts of features. Today, without Theia, it would be impossible to efficiently build a rich IDE for the web.” Community releases provide a great integration point between Theia, neighboring technologies, and the community of adopters.”

“Because of its flexibility and surrounding ecosystem, Eclipse Theia is frequently used as a platform for building custom tools in the embedded domain. It is a key requirement for adoption in the context of doing business, which includes open development processes, “none” telemetry, and a transparent supply chain. We expect the community release to create significant synergies in this important area. Matthew Cosham, Erickson

“Theia’s integration with external services, its commercial openness, and its ability to deeply adapt to domain-specific user flow requirements has enabled Theia to bring new as well as rich client tools to the latest Logi.cals GmbH CTO Heinrcih Steininger said: “The key ingredients in this regard are Eclipse GLSP for domain-specific graphical editors, Theia’s Playwright-based end-to-end testing library, and Lean Hosting Solution. A vibrant ecosystem such as Theia.cloud in Theia, a new community release of Theia facilitates coordination of releases across Theia, its ecosystem, and custom extensions, as well as maintenance and quality assurance of Theia-based products. Simplify.”

Miro Spönemann, Principal Software Architect and CEO at Typefox, said: “The new generation of tools such as his Arduino IDE are almost impossible to create with other off-the-shelf solutions. He has adopted Theia as the basis for several custom IDE solutions. We expect this will make the long-term maintenance of these recruitment projects easier.”
