Synaptive Medical Inc. Announces Dynamic Free Water Compensation Capability to Enhance Planning and Navigation Technologies, The Canadian Business Journal

TORONTO, Oct. 06, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Synaptive Medical Inc., a leader in automated brain mapping and rich patient data, announces evident Today, a powerful new feature in Modus™ Plan software. This patented feature applies free water correction to restore eloquent tracts in areas surrounding brain lesions previously affected by edema. The Reveal for Modus Plan further complements Synaptive’s suite of fully integrated surgical technologies, including surgical navigation and robotic endoscopy.

Free water caused by edema may interfere with the generation of tractography at the brain-tumor interface. This limitation affects the use of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data and the generation of lactography to assess white matter pathways that may inform safer surgical approaches.

“This is a valuable enhancement and an important milestone for Synaptive’s planning platform,” explains Cameron Piron, President and Co-Founder of Synaptive. “By ensuring comprehensive white matter representation in perilesional regions of the brain, surgeons will have the confidence to provide minimally invasive and precise treatments to their patients.”

Synaptive’s Modus Plan software automatically generates whole-brain tractography, visually segmenting tracts into patient-specific bundles. Indications for use include viewing, displaying, and documenting medical images, planning and simulating cranial surgery, and reviewing existing treatment plans. Reveal allows surgeons to view and access free water affected tractography when edema is present. Delivered as a software dynamic tool, the surgeon can control and apply correction algorithms for relevant procedures as needed.

“The widespread adoption of DTI tractography in neurosurgical planning is challenged by the noise in diffuse imaging caused by edema. This prevents lactography from being generated in the region.Synaptive’s free water correction software solves this problem by revealing ducts in edematous regions and showing anatomical distortions. This feature allows for safer Surgery can be performed and tractography will be easier to use,” said Dr. Sebastian Koga, MD FAANS, New Orleans.

Designed for integration with other technologies, including Modus™ Nav, Synaptive’s surgical navigation system, surgeons leverage Modus Plan to evaluate data and perform tumor resection, ICH evacuation, AVM resection, arterial bypass, and can simulate surgical treatments for applications such as functional targeting. The combination of Modus Plan and Modus Nav is Synaptive’s fully integrated range of products, including Modus V, a fully automated robotic endoscope that uses 3D visualization to provide advanced microsurgical visualization. Complements a suite of surgical techniques.

The Reveal for Modus Plan is intended to be incorporated into hospital systems across multiple markets, subject to regulatory approval.

Synaptive will showcase the latest version of Modus Plan, featuring Reveal, at the Annual Meeting of the Neurosurgical Congress (CNS), October 8-12 in San Francisco, CA.
