Thanksgiving weekend brings food, family and fun together, but don’t forget safety

Next weekend is the long Thanksgiving weekend, usually spent with family and enjoying lots of good food. But what are you grateful for this weekend?

No Thanksgiving is complete without an amazing turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and, of course, pumpkin pie for dessert. I know you like pumpkin pie or not. But while you’re stuffing yourself, keep a few food safety tips in mind.

• Keeps hot food hot and cold food cold.

• When traveling to family’s homes this weekend, it’s easier to reheat meals at your destination than trying to keep them piping hot

• Make sure food is properly cooked, especially chicken. The meat on the bone should not be pink and the juices should be clear.

• Clean up leftovers as soon as possible, then park on the couch and take a nap

Do you know what to do if someone chokes? It’s not difficult, but a back blow, chest thrust, or abdominal thrust (any combination of the two) will clear the obstacle. Just in case, don’t panic. it might save someone’s life. Learn First Aid!

Most meals include alcohol, but with a beer in one hand and a turkey drumstick in the other, you may need paramedics if you’re choking. To recognize someone who might be choking, they appear frightened and usually cough ineffectively and walk away from the table. They aren’t breathing and need to act quickly. Lean forward and deliver several sharp blows to the shoulder blades. Then, stand behind you and reach around your belly and pull your belly inward a few times. Repeat until the object comes out. The first few times should be successful, but be persistent. Time is ticking. Immediate action is required. Otherwise, the next house guest won’t need dinner. Paramedics are summoned for help!

Yes, it’s never too late to start thinking about winter. we had a wonderful summer. When will it snow, not if it will snow? Checking your furnace, testing your carbon monoxide detector, and cleaning up your yard are some of your fall essentials. Carbon monoxide detectors are now mandatory in all homes. But start thinking about your car. Before you rush, do you need winter tires? How about an extra blanket, winter safety kit, and shovel? But then again, where are the hats, mitts, and winter coats?

As a final comment, autumn is a busy time. Indoor sports such as hockey, volleyball, and gymnastics carry the same risk of injury as outdoors.

The single biggest injury is concussion. A blow to the head from slipping, tripping, falling, or colliding with another player or fixed object can cause a concussion.

It’s not as simple as having a player sit outside for a few shifts or for a period of time. Requires medical evaluation, adequate rest, and a gradual return to exercise and competition according to the severity of the injury. Make sure you’re not rushing back to play because you need to get the facts and win the game. It’s not about winning. It’s about having fun and getting some healthy exercise that we all need more of.
