On the eve of COP27, climate activists block private jets from taking off from Amsterdam airport – National

Hundreds of climate change protesters blocked the departure of a private jet from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Saturday during a demonstration on the eve of the COP27 UN climate conference in Egypt.

Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion protesters sat around the private jet to keep them from leaving, while others rode bicycles around the plane.

Dewi Zurok of Greenpeace Netherlands said activists want “fewer flights, more trains and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets”.

Military police said they arrested a number of protesters who were on the airport grounds without permission.

In response to an open letter from Greenpeace on Friday, Ruth Sondag, the new CEO of Schiphol Airport, said the airport would be “an emission-free airport by 2030 and a net We are aiming for climate-neutral aviation.” It needed to happen faster.
