“Succession” star James Cromwell super glues hands in protest at Starbucks counter-nationwide

Oscar-nominated actor and animal rights activist James Cromwell went to the Starbucks counter in New York City on Tuesday in protest of the company’s extra charges for vegan milk.

The protests are organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), of which Cromwell, 82, is the Honorary Director.

PETA livestreamed the protest, which lasted about 30 minutes, showing Cromwell sitting at the Starbucks front counter in a “animal release” T-shirt. He and other protesters put up a sign asking Starbucks to “stop claiming more vegan milk.”

“There’s no reason other than greed,” Cromwell told customers at Starbucks on Broadway between West 39th and 40th Avenues. “Are you sure you want to stop charging extra for vegan milk? When do you stop making huge profits while your customers, animals and the environment are suffering?”

According to Cromwell, Starbucks is acting hypocritically by charging an additional fee for milk substitutes.

“Starbucks claims to be more sustainable, but discourages customers from choosing sustainable products,” he said in a speech at a chain cafe. “The company claims to be committed to inclusion and diversity, but still discriminates against people who do not have dairy products.”

During the protest, Cromwell and the protesters chanted, “Save the planet, save the cows, and end the vegan surcharge now!”

Depending on the city, Starbucks charges about 50-70 cents more for dairy alternatives such as soy, oats, and almond milk.Extra charges have recently been withdrawn in the UK but still remain in Canada and the US

“PETA’s friends and I are calling on Starbucks to stop punishing kind and environmentally friendly customers by choosing vegetable milk,” Cromwell said in a PETA press release. “We are all involved in the life-threatening issues of climate disasters, and Starbucks should play that role by ending vegan surcharges.”

After about 15 minutes of protest, a uniformed NYPD police officer entered Starbucks and spoke with one of the PETA protesters, who seemed to continue the protest. They came back 10 minutes later and started turning the protesters out, saying, “You can do whatever you want outside.”

Approximately 30 minutes later, the video shows Cromwell using a knife to scrape the glue off his hand and pull himself off the counter.

PETA confirmed that no one was arrested.

Starbucks has not yet publicly responded to this case.
