Stratford Tennis Club crowns 2022 champions

The Stratford Tennis Club recently crowned its 2022 champions.

Bob Tamblyn played his best tennis of the season to win a record 13th men’s singles title, defeating Jason Erb 6-2, 6-0 in the ‘A’ final.

The men’s singles ‘B’ title match featured first-time finalists Nathan Heyer and Jason Cave, with Heyer coming out on top, 6-2, 7-5.

The ladies’ singles was one of the best draws, with 11 women trying to capture the title. It was an exciting and rally-filled ‘A’ final between Lauren Okrainec and Hajnalka Pope-Kis. Okrainec prevailed 6-0, 6-0 to capture her sixth straight title.

Monica Eickmeyer’s experience paid off in the ‘B’ final, and she captured her sixth career title in that division with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lisa Westelaken.

In men’s doubles, Tamblyn and Erb defended their ‘A’ championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Grant and Kent McPherson, who won the 2021 ‘B’ doubles title.

This year’s men’s doubles ‘B’ title went to John Noble and Kurt Eickmeier, who needed three sets to knock off Jason and Neil Cave, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Claire Scott and Krista Plociennik captured their first ladies’ doubles ‘A’ championship since 2013 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kim Straus and Lori McCabe.

In the ladies doubles ‘B’ final, Marta Andrekovic and Sarah Heaton’s consistency was the difference in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eickmeyer and Sandie Ennett.

The mixed doubles tournament featured 16 teams.

Tamblyn and Andrekovic captured their ninth ‘A’ title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Straus and David Nickel.

The ‘B’ final also went to three sets, with Graham Heaton and Sarah Heaton defeating Larry Shurrie and Donkers 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.

There were a variety of junior and open events to close out the championship season.

In the U18 division, Matthew Furlong defeated Liam Benton 6-1, 6-3 in the boys’ final. In the girls’ singles final, Ava McMillan defeated Meg Feore 6-1, 6-1.

In the U16 category, Liam Benton defeated Barton 6-3, 6-2 for the boys’ singles title. McMillan blanked Madenell McIntosh 6-0, 6-0 for the girls’ singles title. Benton and Harry Robinet defeated Mark Barton and Elliott Barton 6-0, 6-4 for the boys’ doubles crown.

In the U14 division, Liam Benton defeated Ryan Cassone 6-1, 6-4 in the boys’ singles final. Madenell McIntosh beat Sophie Keene 6-1, 6-0 for the girls’ singles title. Liam Benton and Robinet defeated Josh Heaton and Will Heaton 6-1, 6-0 in boys’ doubles, while Liam Benton and Clara Kee won 6-3, 6-3 over Josh Heaton and McIntosh in mixed doubles.

In the U12 division, Will Heaton defeated Noah Marano 6-2, 6-2 for the boys’ singles title. Will Heaton and Marano teamed up to win the boys’ doubles title 6-1, 6-0 over Colton Campbell and Gregory Kis.
