Ontario plans to repeal educated workers law that imposed contracts and banned strikes
Ontario today plans to repeal a law that imposed contracts on educational workers and prohibited them from leaving their jobs.
The province passed a bill on November 3 to try to stop the Civil Servants Union of Canada from going on strike with 55,000 workers.
But thousands of workers left their jobs anyway, and many schools across the state were closed to in-person learning for two days.
Last week, Prime Minister Doug Ford offered to repeal the law if CUPE members returned to work.
To prevent constitutional challenges, government laws that nevertheless used clauses imposed fines of up to $4,000 per day per employee and up to $500,000 per day for unions for violating the law. I was fined a dollar.
Both sides are back at the negotiating table.
