Sports Calgary Awards handed over to karate clubs, charities

Sports Calgary recognized two organizations for their positive impact on their local sports communities by presenting prestigious awards at the 2022 Celebration of Sport Gala.

South Calgary Wado Kai Karate Club won the Perry Cavanagh Award for sporting leadership and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities won the Ron Southern Business and Sport Award honoring companies that support sport in Stampede City.

The Perry Cavanagh Sports Leadership Award recognizes the outstanding contribution of a sports club or organization that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of sports in Calgary.

Founded in 1994, the South Calgary Wadokai Karate Club has trained over 3,000 young people, teenagers and adults in South Calgary. Boasting his 25 active black belts who are also dedicated volunteers, the club hosts his two tournaments a year, and in 2023 will host the 25th tournament, which will feature players and officials from across Canada. We will hold rejuvenating clinics and tournaments.

Olson started the club when he was eight years old. Now 34, she is a two-time Pan-American champion in karate and she is a four-time World Championship medalist. The awards were handed out at the resumption of Sports Calgary’s Celebration of Sport Gala after a two-year hiatus during the pandemic. All proceeds from the event will go to support the city’s amateur sports and programs that encourage sports participation.

Sport Calgary is a volunteer non-profit organization representing more than 300 organizations in Calgary as civic partners. As advocates for sports, we strive to help, support and influence the growth of sports in Calgary.
