Firefighters were called Wednesday afternoon after a large fire broke out at a recycling yard on Mitchell Island in Richmond, British Columbia.
Crew members who arrived at the facility around 4:45 p.m. found thick black smoke billowing from a large pile of recycled materials that had caught fire, according to City of Richmond Fire Chief Jim Wishlove.

Seven units responded and were able to contain the fire, but heavy smoke was expected to continue for some time, he said.
He added that people driving across the Knight Street Bridge are advised to keep their windows closed.

The fire did not threaten the building, and no one who worked in the area was missing.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
