Sending Packages Through Canada Post This Holiday Season? Prepare to Pay More – Nationwide

Canada Post has raised the surcharge on domestic parcels to nearly 40% due to the rising cost of living nationwide.

On November 28th, postal operators will increase the surcharge for domestic services to 39.5%. This is to compensate for rising fuel prices, according to the Canada Post. From November 14th to November 20th, the fuel surcharge was 38%. Currently, it stands at 39%.

“We are directly impacted by changes in fuel prices and make every effort to ensure our surcharges reflect current fuel prices and market dynamics,” said Canada Post spokesperson Phil Rogers. told Global News.

“We apply a fuel surcharge to all parcel services in addition to the base rate for parcel shipping,” he said.

When Kevin Bates arrived at the Canadian Post Office in Halifax with a box of toys for his grandchildren in Asia, he was ready to pay more than he used to.

At Urban Nails, a salon on Danforth Avenue in Toronto, owner Kevin Nguyen is seeing the benefits of nail art, gel polishes and other supplies delivered to the store through Canada Post.

Alicia Gray, owner of Bombshack, a specialty store and gift shop in Rossland, British Columbia, that ships to customers through Canada Post, said:

“Last time it was $0.50 for candy, now it’s $0.75. That’s a lot for them. It makes me sad.”

Canada Post sets its weekly surcharge based on the average price of diesel across Canada, measured by an independent company called Kalibrate Technologies Ltd.

“Fuel surcharges are standard industry practice for parcel shippers due to fuel price fluctuations and their changing impact on operating costs,” Rogers explained on behalf of Canada Post.

“Canada Post manages Canada’s largest transportation network, with thousands of vehicles in our fleet, which has been part of standard practice for nearly 20 years, reducing our dependence on fuel consumption. It’s standard in the shipping industry when you think about it.”

At the beginning of July, the domestic fuel surcharge was 37%.

Apart from domestic service, there is also a 22.75% surcharge for parcels shipped to the US and internationally. This will increase to 23% next week.

Starting November 28th, US and international parcel delivery services that currently charge a surcharge of 20.75% will incur a surcharge of 21%.
