Nanaimo Bulldogs beat Vernons Panthers in Soccer Final 4

The Bulldogs took a bite out of the Panthers.

Nanaimo’s John Barsby Bulldogs advanced to the BC School Sports Senior Varsity AA Football Championship at Vancouver’s BC Place on Saturday, November 26, defeating the Vernon Panthers 36-14.

The Panthers won the AA BC title in 2018 and 2019. In 2020 he did not have a championship due to COVID. There will be no official BC title game in 2021 due to flooding in the state.

Barsby will take on Abbotsford’s Robert Bateman Timberwolves in the Provincial Championship on Saturday, December 3 at BC Place. The Cougars said he hadn’t played a game in over three weeks until Saturday.

No scores were scored between the Bulldogs and the Panthers in the opening 12 minutes. The Cats got on the board before the half ended as quarterback Braden Kunkun hit Mitchell Bond on an 8-yard pass. Gustavo’s Queirelos scored the extra and Nanaimo made it 14-7 for him at the break.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched down the field 70 yards before Lyle’s 7-yard run capped off a 4:30 drive. He also added a two-point conversion to make the score 22-7 Barsby and take it into the final quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, state offensive AA MVP Vernon running back Joe Murphy ran for 20 yards in the majors. The play was set up by a 50-yard Murphy capper on the final play of the third quarter. The converts were drawn to Vernon within a touchdown at 22-14.

Lyle’s third touchdown of the game, a 1-yard plunge with 9:22 remaining, added a two-point conversion to make the score 30–14. Lyle would be called back for his fourth touchdown late in the quarter due to a holding penalty.

Cadew hit Durkan with an 8-yard pass with 3:15 remaining to complete the scoring.

Both teams placed a total of 10 players on their BC AA All-Star teams before the game. Lyler Dalton and Cesare Redner Bruckman were selected offensively by the Bulldogs as offensive lineman and receiver, respectively, while lineman Parker Moscrib and linebacker Colton Finstad were selected defensively. .

Besides Murphy, Vernon’s offensive stars included lineman Terry Johnson, wide receiver Bonds and flexback Hoffman.

Kunkun was named an All-Star at defensive back and Mark Johnson was named the top Grade 11 offensive lineman.
