105 years from Vimy Ridge, Dieppe 80th Anniversary Field of Cross Ceremony – Calgary

The Fields of Cross on Calgary’s Memorial Drive will continue to host anniversaries this year.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Dieppe raid and the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The ceremony will be streamed live on this page at 10:30 am. Global Her News anchor Linda Olsen will officiate the ceremony.

A parade of members of the Calgary Police Department, members of the Calgary Fire Department, pipers and drums, CFD Honor Guards, and the Cantare Children’s Choir are all part of the proceedings.

Members of the Canadian Forces conduct a flyby of the site before laying the wreath and rolling call of the fallen soldiers.

The Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942 was an Allied amphibious assault on the German-held port of Dieppe in northern France. Some historians call it one of the darkest chapters in Canadian military history, after 916 were killed, 2,210 wounded and 1,946 taken prisoner.

However, military historians say that the lessons learned at Dieppe contributed to the successful landing of D-Day on the Normandy coast in June 1944.

Along Memorial Drive between 3rd Street NW and Center Streets, more than 3,600 crosses representing Southern Alberta’s service to their country in war make up the Field of Crosses. This year marks a shift in care from the veteran motorcycle group to his CPS volunteers.

Calgary hosts four memorial day ceremonies: the Hangar Aviation Museum, the Military Museum, the Canadian Pacific Memorial, and Fort Calgary.
