Shapovalov wins in straight sets, Canada takes 1-0 lead in Davis Cup final

Denis Shapovalov led Canada 1-0 to Australia in the Davis Cup final. The Canadian beat Tanasi Kokinakis in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in Malaga, Spain on Sunday.

Canada burst out of their blocks when Shapovalov broke Kokkinakis’ break twice to take a 4–0 lead.

The Australian took a break from the Canadian, but Shapovalov won the first set 6-2 in just 32 minutes.

Shapovalov again beat Kokkinakis twice in the second set, including a fatal break point to make the score 5-2. However, the 23-year-old slipped while serving, sending his Australian rival back in the set. Shapovalov gave Kokkinakis a break with a double fault and the Australian quickly took the next game and cut the deficit to his 5-4.

On his second service serve, Shapovalov chilled the victory and gave Canada a 1–0 advantage in the final.

In the second match, Felix Auger-Aliassime will face the world number one. 24 Alex de Minaur. If desired, Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil will take on Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell in the decisive doubles match.
