Vernon’s school is full of students.
“We’re seeing enrollment growth across the district,” said superintendent Christine Perkins.
Although final numbers for the 2022-2023 school year have yet to be confirmed, Vernon Secondary School is reportedly over capacity with 120 students.
This is a trend we saw last year (2021-2022), when School District 22’s enrollment increased by 185 (2%) to 8,672.
The school board released last year’s financial statements. This shows that the school district’s income increased 4% year-over-year, bringing his total income to $114.9 million compared to his $110.6 million for the 2020-2021 school year. .
The additional income was used to offset increased inflation and hire additional staff to support the growing student population.
The district hired approximately 542 full-time equivalent teachers, an increase of 2% from 2020 to 2021, in line with student growth.
“An early indication is that this growth trend will continue into the 2022-2023 school year,” said Treasury Secretary Adrian Johnson.
According to a report submitted to the Board of Education, the enrollment rate increased by 3.4% and the number of teachers increased by 10.6% over the past five years.
Districts continue to experience far more sick leave than usual. Last year, costs to replace absent staff exceeded budget by about $700,000.
The school district ended the 2021-2022 school year with a $1.2 million contingency, according to its financial statements. The Board also set aside an operating reserve of $1.4 million to balance the 2022-2023 budget.
As the number of students and staff in the school increases, new faces will appear in the classroom.
A photograph of Queen Elizabeth II adorns the walls of the school, but by protocol, over time, a photograph of King Charles will become available.
