The vehicle was traveling north on Rue de la Pierre in the borough around 3pm on Sunday when it crashed through a guardrail and into a canal.

Police responding to a 911 call found the car almost completely submerged, Youakim said. According to initial eyewitness reports, the vehicle was traveling at high speed.

It was too early on Sunday night to know the cause and circumstances of the incident, she said.

Divers from the police tactical intervention group were called in, as was the Montreal Fire Department. An ambulance and a tow truck were waiting. Investigators were to meet with witnesses and examine security camera footage from the area, Yukim said.

A security perimeter was installed along the southern end of the Canal Lachine, between Delarade Avenue and Léger Street, from Cordner Street to Lapierre, on St. Patrick Street.
