Saka, Rashford help England beat Iran in World Cup

DOHA, Qatar — Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford bounced back from last year’s European Championship defeat and scored three goals in Iran’s 6-2 World Cup defeat on Monday.

Both players suffered racist abuse after missing a penalty in a penalty shootout loss to Italy in the Euro 2020 final. A year later, Saka scored twice at the Khalifa International Stadium, and Rashford came off the bench to add another one in the first move of the match.

It was a difficult build-up for England, but it was an encouraging performance for Gareth Southgate, who has endured the most difficult times of his tenure in England recently.

He was booed and humiliated when his fans chanted ‘I don’t know what I’m doing’ after a 4-0 loss to Hungary in June.

Hundreds of fans missed the start of the match due to problems with digital tickets. When they finally took their seats, they witnessed a completely dominant display from England.

Jude Bellingham scored his first goal in the 35th minute – his first international goal.

Saka then played the first of the match in the 43rd inning, with Raheem Sterling adding another game in first-half stoppage time. Saka scored a second goal an hour later, but Mehdi Taremi returned one for Iran in the 65th minute.

Rashford scored six minutes later to extend England’s lead to 5-1 and Jack Grealish also came off the bench to add a sixth in the 90th minute. Talemi added for Iran from the penalty spot deep in injury time after John Stones was penalized for keeping Morteza Pouraliganj’s shirt in the box.

In the first half, Iranian goalkeeper Ali Beiranvand bumped heads with his teammate, which delayed the match for several minutes. He was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher and the score remained 0-0.

His replacement, Hossein Hosseini, was left with the enviable task of facing a strong England attack.

This match recorded a total of 29 minutes of injury time, 15 minutes in the first half and 14 minutes in the second half.
