Ringo Starr tells the secret of taiko while accepting an honorary degree: “I just attacked them”

Ringo Starr was finally awarded an honorary doctorate at a special ceremony held on Thursday, June 2, after attending a graduation ceremony at Berklee College of Music last month and failing to earn an honorary degree.

Former Beatles, generally considered one of the greatest rock drummers in the world, shared his philosophy of playing drums. “You know, I just hit them. That’s all I do. I just hit the bagger,” he deadpanned. “That’s right, I hit them in the right place.”

In his speech, Starr admitted that becoming Dr. Ringo Starr felt like “blowing me” and “strange fairy tales.” He also shared his early stories as a taiko teacher and remembered what he said to students who did not show aptitude. “Maybe a piano for you,” he says.

Star talked about the early gigs he played at the Liverpool factory where he worked, first working on drums when he was recovering from tuberculosis as a kid.

“I just wanted to be a drummer from that moment,” said the star. “It was my big dream, and it’s still unfolding. Like the band here, I can play with great people. It’s a great life I lead.”

The star signed off with his trademark tagline. “So I’m not going to last forever. Thank you, and I’m going to say peace and love!”
