Report: Phillies Bryce Harper undergoes thumb surgery, aiming to return home in August

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper is aiming to return to the lineup in mid-August after surgery on his broken left thumb. Philadelphia Inquirer Report..

The active National League MVP broke his thumb after being hit by Padres’ left-handed Blake Snell on Saturday at a pitch of 97 mph. Harper fell to the ground and was accompanied by a trainer while he felt a clear pain for a few minutes.

He eventually stood up and yelled angry at Snell as he left the field. Phillies announced that his thumb broke after the match, but needed more testing to determine if surgery was needed. Now we know he does.

“He’s actually a man who can’t be personally exchanged, but he needs to be in a position where others have to step up,” said Dave Dombrowski, Phillies’ general manager.

Harper was already playing with his elbow tears, so he could only do DH this season. Nevertheless, he hits .318 / .385 / .599 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs.

The Phillies took part in the play on Tuesday with a record of 39-35, finishing third in the National League East and two games out of the final wildcard ranking.
