Hashtag Trends Aug 11 – Meta worries about its idle workforce. Microsoft disbands prosumer his team.Google Grills Apple With Beef Texting

A Meta CEO worries some employees aren’t working, Microsoft cuts a team focused on prosumer experiences, and Google denounces Apple’s text messaging standards.

Welcome to hashtag trending. This is your host, Samira Bulsara, on Thursday, August 11th.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed concern about the quality of Big Tech’s workforce. Some tech giants are hiring more workers but believe only some of them are doing the job, Zuckerberg said in his Q&A that some at Meta should be there Instead, he said he doesn’t mind employees quitting if he puts pressure on them. His language echoes what Google CEO Sundar Pichai said earlier this month that the company’s productivity does not scale with the size of its staff. He encouraged Google employees to become more mission-focused and customer-centric.

Microsoft is said to have disbanded the Modern Life Experience team. This team was originally formed by him in 2018 to focus on professional consumers. Since then, he has reached out to popular social platforms such as TikTok and Discord to make them more accessible. The company apparently offered other positions or severance pay to his 200 members of the team. Today, Microsoft wants to focus on Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, and its hardware business to attract consumers.

Google has created a new page dedicated to denouncing Apple for not adopting modern text messaging standards. The problem, as illustrated by Google’s playful looking page filled with graphics and links, is that the iPhone doesn’t have a rich set of communication standards. When an Android phone sends an RCS text message to an iPhone, the recipient’s device converts the message to older SMS and MMS standards, often losing quality in the process. In addition to asking Apple to change, Google is also asking fans to spread their message on social media.

A Michigan man, fed up with poor internet service choices, built his own internet service provider. Akamai’s Network His architect Jared Mauch started the project five years ago when Comcast asked for his $50,000 to pull Internet cable into his home. In January 2021, his homebrew internet service was serving 30 of his rural homes, and has since expanded to about 70. Also, a recently signed contract between Mauch and Washtenaw counties saw him receive immediate funding to service his 417 addresses in the area. A resident pays just $55 for 100 Mbps internet and no data cap, or $78 for 1 Gbps. This is a steal for rural residents who are hungry for a good internet connection.
