John Tory to make housing announcement in East York

Mayor John Torry will make a housing announcement today in East York with Federal Housing Minister Ahmed Hussen.

Mr Torrey, who won re-election just weeks ago, has promised to make housing a priority in his next term. announced that it would create a dedicated city department to advance.

The move comes as the state aims to build 1.5 million homes over the next decade, 285,000 of which are in Toronto.

As part of a plan to boost housing development, the state wants to reduce or waive development costs for some developers.

These fees typically flow to local governments to help pay for city improvements related to buildings, such as better sewage systems and green space. The state has suggested that the federal government may help make up for the shortfall in local government funding that arises from waiving claims to developers.
