Brampton City Council on Monday night amended an ordinance banning the sale or use of private fireworks in the city, which went into effect immediately.

On Wednesday, Dennis Keenan, a regional councilor representing the city’s Third and Fourth Wards, introduced a motion to amend the Fireworks Ordinance to ban the sale and use of fireworks and increase current fines.

This was supported by District Councilor Gurpartap Toor of Districts 9 and 10.

The motion passed unanimously and was approved at a board meeting on Monday night.

“As I promised during my recent election campaign, I will sit on Brampton City Council and make a difference. I will voice the concerns of residents and take action on issues that will improve our community,” Keenan said in a news release. I got

Prior to that, residents could only set off fireworks four times a year on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve.

They were also only allowed to set off pyrotechnics at short distances from private property for those holidays. The same goes for launching.

The new ordinance eliminates these four exceptions, making personal fireworks use illegal at all times.

The bylaws also impose higher fines on those who do not comply with the new rules.

Fines for setting off fireworks will be increased from $350 to $500, and fines for sales will be increased from $350 to $1,000.

The film industry and city-sponsored events are exempt from the ban.

The bylaws come weeks after a year-old petition to limit fireworks in Brampton and surrounding areas began to circulate. As of Monday night, more than 10,000 people had signed.

The city says it has received nearly 1,500 fireworks-related complaints this year, citing excessive noise, fire safety concerns and trash as some of the complaints. In 2018 he had 492 cases.

So far this year, Brampton’s ordinance and enforcement team says it has fined more than $38,000.
