According to Saltwire’s report, the RCMP has acquired “the technology necessary to immediately equip all specialized and unmarked vehicles with mobile workstations and equip all members with GPS and mapping.” The union says it needs to be implemented.
Emergency Response Team (ERT) officers had installed a GPS location app on their work phones, according to reports, but the app was not working during the weekend of the massacre.
The union also noted there was confusion among officers on the ground trying to track down the shooter. Broadcast regularly through a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to help members maintain situational awareness and stay on top of the situation. Risk assessed and reported by Saltwire.
Also, during the incident, the RCMP helicopter was unavailable while police officers attempted to pursue the shooter. The union recommends that her four states in the Atlantic and the federal government develop and implement emergency air services strategies to ensure that air support is available to officers when needed.
The union also said it did not reflect current training needs, noting the need to provide clear guidance on the consistency of training to police services.
