Penguins beat Flames 2-1 as Malkin’s penalty shootout goal – Calgary

Evgeny Malkin scored the decisive goal on penalties as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Wednesday night to secure their fourth straight win.

Malkin, who was recognized for playing his 1,000th NHL game on Sunday, flicked a backhand over Dan Vlader’s glove. After Malkin scored, he threw his stick into the crowd and celebrated with his teammates.

Dillon Dube scored in the second period for the Flames, who won two straight games. Calgary has won four of his last six games following a seven-game losing streak.

Vladar made his fourth start of the season and stopped 38 shots for the first time since November 10.

Lutta opened the scoring at 2:09 when he beat Vladar with a blocker-side wrist shot from between the circles.

Pittsburgh appeared to be leading 2–0 with a Brian Last goal. However, it was shaken off by an offside call following the coach’s challenge.

Calgary then tied it at 1 at 8:37 of the second when Duve redirected Chris Tanev’s shot behind Jarry.

Malkin was honored

The Penguins celebrated Malkin in his first home game after appearing in his 1,000th career regular-season game in Chicago on Sunday.

All of Malkin’s teammates were wearing his #71 jersey during warmups. Malkin’s wife Anna and his 6-year-old son Nikita joined him on the ice during the pre-match ceremony. He received a personal gift to mark his 1,000th career game, including a silver hockey stick.

Flame Continues Road Trip

Calgary played the fourth game of a six-game road trip during the season.

The Flames lost the first game of the trip against Tampa Bay, but rebounded with wins against Florida and Philadelphia before losing in a shootout against the Penguins on Wednesday. Calgary concludes the trip with games in Washington and Carolina.
