Prince Albert’s Shuchuck wins silver at Canadian Summer Games

Prince Albert’s Kristol Szczuk finished on the podium last weekend at the Canadian Summer Games in Niagara, Ontario.

The 32-year-old won silver in the 2.4m Para Mix event behind Ontario’s Siobhan Macdonald. But the story was a close one between Shuchuk and her state teammate Paige Butts from Regina.

Going into the final day of racing, Szczuk and Butts were tied for second place in the event.

Schuchak won the final race of the event and took the silver medal, but she said she was very excited to share the podium with her Saskatchewan teammates.

The non-sailing experience was as memorable as the time on the water, says Szczuk. When she wasn’t competing, she says she really enjoyed the social aspect of meeting other athletes from all over the country.

“It was packed and super busy. It was great to meet and talk with people from different prefectures. There was a lot of pin sharing going on and we were trying to collect pins from other states. It was a great experience.” And the whole environment was great.”

Shewchuk previously competed in sailing at the 2017 Canada Summer Games but failed to win a medal. In 2019, she competed at the Canadian Winter Games in Cross Country She won a bronze medal.
