Power outages after Muskrat Falls power line test fails in Labrador
st. JOHN’S, NL – Labrador’s Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project faces even more challenges.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro have confirmed that a test of a power line linking a hydroelectric dam to Newfoundland has failed.
Known as the Labrador Island Link, the line was expected to carry heavy loads during testing, but something went wrong.
The utility released a statement on Facebook saying the system was tripped by what is called a low-frequency load dump, which occurs when there is a sudden imbalance between generation and demand.
Thousands of businesses and homes lost power for about 30 minutes.
The Muskrat Falls project is five years behind schedule, and the total cost, originally estimated at $7.4 billion, has risen to $13.1 billion as of September 2020.
This report by the Canadian Press was first published on November 25, 2022.
