“We are dissatisfied with the decision taken regarding (defendant’s) bail and will not rest until full justice is served. This can be swept under the threshold or easily forgotten.” It is not.

Paige Theriault-Fisher, 22, was initially charged with second-degree murder in connection with Hashi’s stabbing death, but Saskatoon police are reviewing evidence, including a viral video recorded by a club patron. It was later downgraded to manslaughter. Theriault-Fisher said Thursday she was released from her custody on $5,000 bail.

On the other hand, the Hashi family is said to be upset over the loss of their kind, sociable and smiling older sister and many friends. Born in Ottawa, Hodan was his fifth of her nine children born to his parents Osman his Hashi and Anab her Hirsi who immigrated to Canada from Somalia in 1989.

Religion was the foundation of the family, the brothers noted, and Hodan was perceived as a proud Muslim woman. As a child, she attended Saturday school at the mosque. In her youth, she accompanied her parents to her hometown in East Africa and immersed herself in her language, religion and culture.

In Canada, the family lived for several years in Saskatoon, where Haudan made friends and attended high school before returning to Ottawa.

Haudan returned to Saskatoon in 2021 and worked two jobs before his death. One was a waitress in a restaurant, the other part-time she was an interpreter for newcomers to Somalia, but her goal was to work in special education. She planned to begin her Early Childhood Education studies in January at her Polytechnic in Saskatoon, a higher education institution in Saskatoon.

“We had an exceptional sister and they were really close,” said the brother. I wanted to help make society more inclusive.

Haudan was close to all of her siblings and often played the role of peacemaker in the family. “She never saw her upset. If there were petty quarrels between siblings, she was the mediator.

Nearly 500 people, including friends and family from Ottawa, Saskatchewan and the United States, gathered for Janaza, a Muslim funeral service, on Friday.

“With everyone she met, she became instant friends,” said the brother. There was great joy and hope in her.”

A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family to raise money for funeral costs last week exceeded its goal of US$42,000. It is said to be used for construction.

“We are going to do a lot in her name because when someone dies they can’t do it anymore so donating to charity in that name is part of our religion.” It’s the foundation,” said the brother.
