Pauline and Nurse lead Canada with victory over Finland in World Championship opener

HERNING, Denmark — Marie-Philippe Pullin and Sarah Nurse scored goals and assists respectively to kick off the Canadian Women’s Hockey World Championship with a 4-1 win over Finland on Thursday.

Meaghan Mikkelson also scored and Blayre Turnbull added an empty net goal for the defending champions at the Kvik Hockey Arena in Herning, Denmark. Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped her 16 shots, including penalty shots in the first period, to clinch the win.

Julia Rikala took on the Finn, who was a bronze medalist at the Olympics in February and at last year’s Calgary World Championships.

Canada will face Switzerland in Pool A on Saturday and Japan on Sunday. Japan lost her 10-0 loss to the United States on Thursday.
