Training puts indigenous people in the driver’s seat of logging trucks in North Okanagan

State-funded training trains local logging truck drivers.

Eight eligible British Columbians will receive skills training for employment as professional logging truck drivers in the northern Okanagan and Shuswap regions.

The Department of Social Development and Poverty Reduction’s Community Employer Partnership (CEP) project focuses on providing vocational training and work experience to indigenous peoples and youth.

“This project is empowering indigenous peoples and youth by providing new employment opportunities in the professional logging sector,” said Minister for Social Development and Poverty Reduction Nicholas Simmons. “Participants who graduate from the program will be equipped with the skills they need to find a rewarding career as a professional logging truck driver in the North Okanagan and Shuswap regions.”

The state has provided over $350,000 to Okanagan College in Vernon to provide a professional industrial driver training program.

“Graduates from this training program will undergo mandatory entry-level training (MELT), mandatory for new truck drivers from October 2021, helping people become professional logging truck drivers while driving on the highway. Make it safe,” said Robb. Fleming, Minister for Transport and Infrastructure.

Full-time, group-based learning for this project will run from November 28, 2022 through June 2023. If you would like to learn more about this or any of his CEP projects, please contact his local WorkBC center.
