Volt Carbon Technologies Inc. establishes graphite testing capability at its Guelph plant, The Canadian Business Journal

Calgary, Alberta, Canada, October 18, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Volt Carbon Technologies Inc. (“bolt carbon” or “Company) (TSX-V: VCT & OTCQB: TORVF) is pleased to announce the commissioning of its Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) instrument at its Guelph plant. The TGA method is based on measuring the mass loss of a material as a function of temperature. Volt’s new machine has the ability to test materials up to 1100°C, a reasonable range required for the testing and characterization of graphene and graphite.

A sample TGA graph of previously isolated graphite flakes obtained from the Volts air classification process is shown below. The plot shows that the graphite (Cg) has a purity of 89.68% and the sum of carbon (C) and Cg is 95.21%.

The TGA results enable Volt to determine the quality and purity of the graphite material separated from the air classifier. Having this capability in-house allows Volt to get his TGA results in a few hours of processing. Volt can then use real-time data to make process adjustments on the fly to improve graphite separation efficiency. Previously, each batch of process material requiring TGA took two to four weeks. This approach significantly reduced the development time of graphite ore samples for air classification testing. Typically, 4 batches of his TGA are required in succession to repeatedly dial in the air classifier flow settings and adjust the screening deck of the air classifier. With this capability in-house, Volt is now able to report graphite results from start to finish. This includes initial head grade assessment with significantly shorter turnaround times compared to previous methods using external labs. As a result of this new capability, Volt’s goal for graphite ore air classification turnaround time is less than one month for a 100 kg sample of graphite ore crushed to 10-12 mesh. The new TGA capability will allow Volt to successfully expand and develop its unique air classifier technology.
