Oak Bay Teen Dedicates To Basketball At University Of Pittsburgh

When COVID-19 precautions closed the doors to the workouts and sports she loved since fourth grade, Lauren Rust began considering her options.

The Oak Bay basketball player couldn’t understand not attending her dream post-secondary school, a Division I college.

In the summer of 2020, she was invited to participate in several high performance basketball BC programs including contactless games in Vancouver. It was severely restricted, but it allowed some training and improvement.

She was in the 10th grade and worried that it would interfere with her high-level ball goals and scholarships, so she started thinking about living elsewhere. Rast and her father surveyed every prep school in Ontario, California, and Washington to find a balance between education and sports.

Often she was simply too late to apply, or the school did not offer boarding.

“One day we were talking about it… I didn’t think I’d actually do it,” the teenager said.

Her aunt in Tennessee suggested a web school for the previous year’s state champion, Bell Buckle. The Oak Bay player sent the video to her coach and her coach responded by email saying she would be accepted within a day of her.

The day Rust received the email, he was sitting at the mall when he realized his passport had expired a week before school started. She arrived in Tennessee the day after her Labor Day and began her 11th grade.

“I gained a lot of independence from that. It was a big cultural change for me,” she said. “I feel like I’ve made the best friends of my life. It’s like taking a vacation every day.”

Teammates currently hail from America, Denmark, and China, immersing her in various cultures.

It was the highest level of training, hard work and commitment expected of her, and it paid off. The team won the state championship again.

During the summer, she found time to play with Team BC in the U17 Nationals, finishing second against Ontario and Rust was named a First Team All-Star. She and three of her teammates also went to her U18 Canada game. “We didn’t get along very well, but it was really fun to be a part of it.”

For the rest of the summer, she focused on different brand-based competitive circuits, which were a major source of recruitment. She joined the Under Her Armor her circuit and competed in her tournaments in the arena of four games a day through May, June and July.

The work culminated in 15 different scholarship offers.

On November 11, as part of state competition and training, the dream fostered on the hardwood courts of St. Patrick’s, Monterey Middle, St. Michael’s University School, British Columbia, and her ultimate goal, the University of Pittsburgh culminated in the signing of

Rust will be heading home for Christmas for a few days before heading to a tournament in Florida.
