Clara wasn’t the only one making dreams come true on stage at Victoria’s Royal Theater this winter.

Showcasing the talents of Canada’s top dancers, The Nutcracker returns to Victoria from December 2-4 with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. From battling the evil Mouse King to the glorious kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairies, the costumes, choreography and characters in this unique Canadian production will captivate audiences.

Oak Bay ballerina Mackenzie Mount will move to Winnipeg in January to train with the world-famous Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Anna McCowan-Johnson Aspirant Program and return to her roots in Dance Victoria’s biggest production of the year.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Applicant Program allows selected dancers to perform in company. This is not an opportunity many ballet programs offer, Mount explained. She dances countless roles in The Nutcracker, Bat, Mouse, Snowflake, and Cold in Waltz, becoming her ballet lady.

“If you told me this time last year that I would be performing with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, you wouldn’t believe it, and my former ballet coaches would be able to watch my performances and see my progress.” It is very rewarding to be able to perform in my hometown.I am here today because of the teachers at the Victoria Academy of Ballet.”

Mount is excited to perform for her home community, especially those who have helped prepare her for this career.

“Being able to perform in front of hundreds of people is an indescribable feeling. That’s why I spend hours practicing and rehearsing, to prepare for the stage,” she said. “I look forward to many more performances. This job is very unique and a dream come true.”

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet The Nutcracker continues to be Dance Victoria’s biggest presentation. In addition to the 27 company dancers, the staging included his 45 members of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, his 72 children from the Nutcracker Ensemble’s local dance school, and his crew of 35 backstage. will be
