Neymar injured ankle during Brazil’s World Cup win

Lusail, Qatar (AP) — Brazilian forward Neymar was crying on the bench with ice tape on his ankle after being substituted in Thursday’s 2-0 World Cup win over Serbia.

Neymar injured his right ankle in the second half and was substituted in the 79th minute. He was heavily tackled several times during the match, leaving him limping and grimacing before having to leave the field.

During the final minutes of the match at Lusail Stadium, he was in tears on the bench as doctors began treating him. He pulled the shirt over his head while doctors taped ice to his leg. He limped into the changing room with his ankle swollen.

Brazilian doctor Rodrigo Rasmar said Neymar’s condition would be evaluated and did not speculate on the extent of the injury.

“Let’s see how he reacts,” Rasmer told Brazilian media. “We have started treatment, but we need to be vigilant and patient. It’s too early to say anything. We’ll see how it goes.”

Neymar arrived in Qatar in good shape after suffering a string of injuries since the 2018 World Cup. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, his tournament ended with a back injury in the quarterfinals against Colombia and he had to be taken off the field on a stretcher.

At 30, Neymar has yet to win a major title with his national team. He helped ‘Seleção’ win his 2013 Confederations Cup and his first Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

With 75 goals for the national team, he is two shy on Pele’s scoring record.
