New Vernon Peanut Pools Are Taking Shape Despite Construction Challenges
The project to replace Vernon’s Peanut Pool is on schedule despite some construction challenges.
In a report to the council, swim manager Gary Lefebvre said more than 2,700 cubic meters of clay had been removed and geotechnical improvements were completed at the Lakeview Wading Pool Reclamation Project site in East Hill. said.
“The facility’s location in East Hill presented several challenges with the extensive clay soils common to the area,” the report said.
The site was backfilled and concrete was poured for the pool foundation, surge tank and building foundation.
The planned start date for the pool is late June 2023, which is in line with previous timeline estimates.
“All key components of the mechanical system must be made available for this project in order to open the pool for the summer of 2023,” the report said.
The report notes that the supply chain is improving overall, but some production backlogs are delaying deliveries.
Once completed, Interior Health should inspect the pool before it is open to the public.
This project replaces the “beloved” peanut pool, first opened to the public in 1958.
“Management is proceeding with appropriate due diligence to ensure the new facility will stand the test of time and will be loved by the community for years to come,” the report said.
Although the new pool will be C-shaped, its design pays homage to the iconic Peanut Pool, with groundscapes that capture the footprints of the original pool’s concrete design.
The total cost of the project was $3.3 million, with nearly $2 million coming from grants.
