Isber went on to say that most medical lab assistants (MLAs) in the Thompson Rivers University program take an eight-week apprenticeship.

“We also have an eight-week internship with a phlebotomist that focuses solely on venipuncture collection (blood sampling) and the processes around it,” says Isber.

“MLAs come from other programs, so their scope of practice is greater. They understand microbiology, pathology, and transfusion, and learn more about other areas of laboratory medicine. We have lab assistants working in all these areas.”

Interior Health already employs five phlebotomists and hopes to hire 11 to 12 more.

“There is no intention to preclude collection from the MLA as it is essential to our testing program and our healthcare system. It’s about taking some of the workload off the high vacancies we’re running into,” says Isber.

“This is an opportunity for us to innovate and make collection services available to patients in both communities and critical care.”
