British Columbia officials, including Prime Minister David Evey, paid tribute to the Department of Child and Family Development employee who was shot dead in Prince Rupert on Monday.
North Coast City’s RCMP says a man who shot himself after killing a woman at a shopping mall has also died.
Police said the apparent murder-suicide at the Ocean Center Mall was an “isolated incident” and that the 44-year-old shooter and 52-year-old victim knew each other, but did not disclose how they knew. says no.
Police said the woman died before being taken to hospital, and the attacker, who was in critical condition, died hours later.
A statement issued by the prime minister’s office said the shooting was “an act of violence against a person who was working to serve local children and families.”
The ‘tragic event’ is still the subject of police investigation.
The statement was made late Tuesday on behalf of Evie, Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth, Children and Families Minister Mitzi Dean, and Emergency Preparedness Rep. Jennifer Rice.
“My heart goes out to those who acted immediately to provide emergency medical care, to those who may have witnessed this violence, and to those whose safety was threatened by yesterday’s events,” it says.
“We are here for you. We will be here for you in the days, weeks and months to come.”
Eby told a BC Workers’ Federation convention in Vancouver on Tuesday that the victim was a member of the BC General Workers’ Union, but gave no other details.
“In moments like this, we think about public safety issues and make sure our homes and communities are safe for everyone.”
Prince Rupert Mayor Herb Pond called it “really tragic” and said everyone in the community of more than 12,000 could get help.
The RCMP urges anyone with information about this attack to come forward.
