Discord Features Everyone Should Know
Discord is no longer just for gamers. It’s becoming a safe haven for communities that are being kicked out of other platforms like Slack and Instagram. Discord’s free plan gives you enough power to run a large community with moderation, rules, and more. But one of Discord’s downsides is the UI. Discord’s use cases may have evolved, but the interface still remains in the gamer’s world. If you find dark backgrounds, autoplaying emojis, animations, and small text annoying, here are some accessibility settings you can tweak to make Discord easier on your eyes.
Discord has a separate accessibility section in Settings, while smaller quality-of-life features are spread across the Settings app.
Start with your Discord accessibility settings
click Equipment Open with Discord app icon setting. From the sidebar, selectaccessibility. The settings you need to change are:
- saturation: Desaturate UI elements to make them cooler.
- role color: If you prefer, you can choose not to display role colors at all.
- Enable motion reduction: Use this toggle to handle all washing animations. Enabling this feature will cause Discord to automatically disable GIF playback when a GIF is in focus, and also remove animated emojis.
- sticker: “don’t animate‘ sticker options, and thank us later.
Adjust background and text size
Next to the accessibility tour is “exterior“section setting.
- theme: If you don’t like the dark background, click “light” theme options. Sync with Computer or Automatic are good options if you want the Discord app to automatically match your current system theme.
- dark sidebar: Enable this feature to keep the sidebar in dark mode when the rest of Discord is light themed. This setting helps Slack users feel at home.
- Message display: Make sure it is set to “”comfortable” So the thread has more slack.
- chat font scaling: Here you can precisely adjust the text size, the spacing between message groups, and the overall zoom level. Make everything at least 20% larger to improve readability, even if you’re not visually impaired. For me, a font size of 18 pixels and a zoom level of 110% works best.
Choose how text and images are displayed
